Hurricanes total too much for Strikers in Hobart

The Hobart Hurricanes have beaten the Adelaide Strikers by 28 runs at Ninja Stadium.

The Adelaide Strikers won the toss and elected to bowl first in Hobart.

Megan Schutt’s trademark inswinger instantly came into play, bowling Wyatt-Hodge for a golden duck and tying down the explosive Lizelle Lee.

Lee and Carey came together for a 133-run partnership, taking advantage of boundary deliveries. The pair combined power and finesse to play with the visitors' fielding positions.

By drinks the Hurricanes were 1-85, with the batters looking set against an attack struggling to find consistency.

Going against convention, the Hurricanes activated the power-surge in the 11th over and kept the momentum moving, with powerful strokes from Lee and Carey throwing Schutt and Mushangwe off their lengths.

Lee brought her up a hundred from just 57 deliveries with a 4 over extra cover, her second hundred in as many innings. However, she was soon dismissed under unusual circumstances, with a cross-bat stroke from Carey deflecting off Jemma Barsby and running Lee out at the bowler’s end.

Villani joined the set Carey for a quick cameo of 23*, propelling the hosts score to 2-191.

The openers for the Adelaide Strikers used their feet early, dancing down to access over cover and using the depth of the crease to target the short square boundary.

Katie Mack (14) and Smriti Mandhana (51) guided the Strikers to the end of the powerplay, with good running and hard hitting leaving the score on 0-41.

Mandhana pierced the point region regularly, with her timing on the square drive echoing around the stadium, as she brought up 50 from just 30 deliveries.

Much like their Striker counterparts the Hurricane bowlers struggled to find their length, with the square boundary being found frequently from short balls. The introduction of Amy Smith and Lauren Smith into the bowling attack saw a tighter bowling line, eventually leading to the dismissal of Mandhana, caught at mid-on.

With the score at 1-82 at drinks, the Adelaide Strikers pair of Mack and Wolvaardt were forced to attack after the break but failed to beat the outfielders. When Mack was dismissed, she was quickly followed by McGrath (4) who found the fielder in the deep after struggling to get going.

The power-surge was activated with Wolvaardt and Patterson (23*) at crease, however the surge caused little change in the momentum of the game.

Wolvaardt begun to find the fence late in the innings to eventually finish on 63*.

In the end the total was too much for the visitors, with the Hobart Hurricanes winning by 28 runs.

The Adelaide Strikers play next at Adelaide Oval on Saturday 16 November.
